Motivation

So, I watched Invictus a couple weeks ago (maybe four or so...who knows?) and I really enjoyed it. And I am not a poem fan. The most excited I get about poems is when they mention excercise, running, or the other things such as that. Love poems? Not my style. I also try to avoid the ones that are incredibly angsty in their delivery. My favorite poems, however, refer to the indomitability of the human spirit. Poems that challenge the reader to 'take the road less traveled' or to war against the inner man. So I looked up the poem the movie referred to, and loved it. I'd like to share it with you.

Invictus by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

And though I may not completely agree with some of its sentiments, I do think I would like the menace of the years to find me still unafraid. :) And with God, I'm pretty sure this will be the case.
Thanks for letting me share.
